Twelve-Time Olympic Medalist Dara Torres Joins International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) Board of Directors
Torres Among Six New Board Members Leading Hall of Fame Into New Era as
Multimillion-Dollar Renovation Plans Begin
ISHOF Redevelopment Follows $47 Million Update to Fort Lauderdale’s
World-Renowned Aquatic Center
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Feb. 1, 2023 – The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), the official repository for aquatic history, today announced the addition of six new members to its board of directors, including twelve-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres.
Joining Torres, the additional new members joining ISHOF’s board of directors include:
David Arluck: Founder and CEO of Fitter and Faster Swim Camps
Stathis Avramidis, Ph.D. (Based in Greece): Teacher of applied lifeguarding-lifesaving sport at Athens University; President of the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association; ISHOF award recipient (2009, 2012)
Bobby Brewer: Co-Founder of Beard Swim Company Swim Schools, Level 4 ASCA Coach
Ned Denison (Based in Ireland): International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Inductee (2012); Chairperson of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame
John Ellsworth: Sales and Design, Splash Pools; FSPA Design Award Winner
Led by the Chairman of the Board, Bill Kent, the new members will help further ISHOF’s vision for the future. With the redevelopment project underway, the $190 million state-of-the-art complex will include two iconic buildings, which will house a fully updated and modern display of aquatic sports history, two event spaces with 360-degree views of the intracoastal and Atlantic Ocean, a three-star Michelin chef restaurant, public gardens, meeting rooms, and shared office spaces.
“It’s an honor to be among ISHOF’s board of directors,” said Torres. “As a life-long swimmer, I look forward to working closely with the rest of the board to celebrate the rich history of swimming with a transformative aquatic complex that will be for everyone.”
Torres is the first swimmer to represent the United States in five Olympic Games (1984 – 2008), and at 41, was the oldest swimmer to earn a place on the U.S. Olympic team. She’s also one of only a handful of Olympians to earn medals in five different games, with a total of 12 medals – four gold, four silver, four bronze – to her name.
“It’s incredible to add Dara and the other new members to our board of directors, many who have been connected to swimming their entire lives,” said Kent. “We began demolition on the original building in December and are ready to embark on a new era for ISHOF.”
Opened in 1967, the original museum featured some of the most iconic artifacts in the history of aquatic sports, including the eight Olympic gold medals won by Michael Phelps at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and swimsuits worn by legends. It has also paid tribute to special moments in aquatic history, such as Gertrude Ederle’s crossing of the English Channel.
“I’d like to thank Dara and all our new board members for joining us on this incredible journey,” said ISHOF CEO Anne Schmidt. “We’re excited to work alongside the City of Fort Lauderdale, Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Commissioner Steve Glassman to make our city the swimming and diving capital of the world.”
The new board will join Chairman Bill Kent, Vice President Steve Hasty, Secretary Mike Dooley, Treasurer Matt McKean and Ft. Lauderdale City Commissioner Steve Glassman. Additional board members include Sandra Bucha, Mario Caprini, David Duda, Aaron Peirsol and Steve West.
Slated to open in 2025, ISHOF’s iconic upgrade will complement Fort Lauderdale’s $47 million renovation of its world-renowned aquatic center, which boasts one of the highest diving platforms in the world at 27 meters, and Olympic-caliber pools for both competitive and public use.

Monaco’s Princely Family Celebrate Completion of World-Renowned Aquatic Center at International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale
The City of Fort Lauderdale recently welcomed Monaco’s princely family, their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene to celebrate the completion of the City’s world-renowned Aquatic Center located at the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) following a multimillion-dollar revitalization project.
The new center, boasts one of the tallest dive towers in the world and state-of-the-art competition pools for both competitive and public use.
Their Serene Highnesses have a keen interest in Fort Lauderdale’s Aquatic Center and the International Swimming Hall of Fame as H.S.H. Prince Albert II is a 2011 gold medallion ISHOF honoree, and his uncle Jack Kelly Jr. served as the ISHOF president in the 1980s.

FINA becomes World Aquatics as new brand launched
Melbourne, 12 December 2022; FINA, the Fédération Internationale de Natation, has today become World Aquatics following a vote at the Extraordinary General Congress on the eve of the World Swimming Championships (25m) 2022. Over its 114-year history, FINA and its 209 member federations have maintained responsibility for swimmers, artistic swimmers, divers, high divers, open water swimmers and water polo players.
The launch of the World Aquatics brand arrives after a series of major reforms that sees a modern organisation ready to lead and serve athletes united by water, with a broader scope and increased engagement with participants and audiences.
“Everyone in our community is proud of what FINA achieved in developing our sports. As we look to the future, World Aquatics will see all aquatics athletes united for the first time under one brand. The identity of our organisation now focuses on our shared vision: a world united by water, for health, life and sport,” said World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam.
World Aquatics – The Global Home of Aquatic Sports
The new identity for the global aquatics community came after a comprehensive canvassing of the sports’ key stakeholders.
“I will always tell you that our athletes must come first, so I would never make a big decision like this without consulting our athletes,” the World Aquatics President said. “Their response has been very clear. More than seventy percent of the athletes that we have spoken with have said that they would like us to change FINA’s name. Many of them could not even tell us what the letters in FINA stand for.”
The adoption of the World Aquatics name was confirmed by a vote of member federations at an Extraordinary Congress in Melbourne earlier today. It marks the culmination of 18 months of intensive organisational transformation, much of it guided by the FINA Reform Committee. During this process, World Aquatics has made very significant improvements to its governance, including the strengthening of the athletes’ voice in decision-making and the creation of an independent Aquatics Integrity Unit.
We Are World Aquatics
“World Aquatics will continue to deliver and develop the rewarding competition calendar that has become the foundation of successful elite careers while being the subject of dreams and ambitions for millions of young aquatics athletes all around the globe,” continued Al-Musallam. “Our new vision and mission also reflect how World Aquatics and our members have already begun expanding our work beyond competition and swimming as a life skill, to include sustainability, environmental advocacy and wellbeing. Our new brand and visual identity will also enable us to connect with new audiences and encourage new generations of athletes across our disciplines to be united by water, safely, fairly and sustainably.”
The new World Aquatics visual identity will be rolled-out at the first events of 2023. In the interim, the federation’s portfolio of digital assets has been refreshed, including @worldaquatics social platforms. A new website will be launched in conjunction with the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka next summer (14-30 July 2023), the first World Championships fully integrating the new brand identity.
“World Aquatics is determined to play its part in ensuring the ability to participate, compete in and benefit from aquatic sports. This ability is dependent on being able to swim and having access to places to swim. Both these things are incredibly important to World Aquatics and our member federations, and it’s right that our new brand should reflect that,” said World Aquatics Executive Director Brent Nowicki.

Thank you for your support of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Below is an inspirational video that will provide a glimpse into our spiritual mission; there are three facets to the reason we exist:
INSPIRE: preserving the history of aquatics by inducing worthy aquatic heroes and Olympic champions into our Swimming Hall of Fame.INVIGORATE: record events and activities in our library related to the history of the human race’s relationship with water.INSTIGATE: our spiritual purpose is Every Child A Swimmer! We are actively pursuing this goal by providing swim lessons to those children from families that can’t afford swim lessons!
“The International Swimming Hall of Fame is only as strong as the engagement of its members, and we need your help to make this new era of the Hall of Fame a success.” If you are interested in joining us in supporting any phase of these three goals, please contact me personally.

City of Fort Lauderdale to Hold “Sneak Peek Media Day” at Aquatic Center with USA Diving and Red Bull Cliff Diving
The City of Fort Lauderdale and the Fort Lauderdale Diving Team will host a “Sneak Peek Media Day” at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center in coordination with USA Diving and Red Bull on Monday, June 6 at 10 a.m. The event will highlight the entire spectrum of the sport of diving, from the humble beginnings of grassroots training programs to Olympians and world champion high divers.
After undergoing extensive renovations over the past few years, the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center is now the first permanent facility in the western hemisphere capable of accommodating divers at 27 meters.
“The renovation of the aquatic complex restores Fort Lauderdale as a premier destination for global competitive swimming and diving at a venue that is also available for resident use. The demonstration by US Diving illustrates the long-term value that we have achieved and the excitement that we are generating,” said Mayor Dean Trantalis.
World champion high diver Steven LoBue and 2020 Olympian Brandon Loschiavo will be among the divers participating in the media day, which will feature divers from the Fort Lauderdale Dive Team, USA Diving’s High-Performance Squad, and Red Bull Cliff Diving. The event will allow the media to see the renovated facility while learning about the sport of diving at all levels.
“The City of Fort Lauderdale is totally committed in a huge way to returning to the top of the swimming and diving world. We are excited to welcome back all the incredible athletes,” said Commissioner Steve Glassman.
Six members of USA Diving’s High-Performance Squad, including Loschiavo, will be on hand to discuss Olympic highlights, what it takes to train at an elite level, and the future of the sport at the national and international levels. Tier 2 High-Performance Squad member Jordan Rzepka, who will compete at the World Championships next month, will participate as well along with Tier 3 High-Performance Squad members Kaylee Bishop, Matthew Brisson, Emilie Moore, and Juliet Radich. Bishop, Moore, and Radich represented the United States at the Junior Pan American Championships last fall.
High divers and High-Performance Squad members will also share knowledge, tricks, and tips for safe and successful diving with the media and members of the Fort Lauderdale Dive Team.
Renovation of the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center began in 2019 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2022.

Craig Beardsley: 1980 Olympic Hopeful and World Record Holder in the 200 Butterfly to be Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame
Craig Beardsley to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, October 15, 2022
Craig Beardsley is a former American competitive swimmer who was a world record-holder in the 200-meter butterfly for three years in the early 1980s. Beardsley won the gold medal in his signature event, the 200-meter butterfly, at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he swam for coach Randy Reese’s Florida Gators in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 1979 to 1982.

Craig Beardsley qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in 1980, but could not participate when the U.S. Olympic Committee, at the behest of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, voted to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. The Games were boycotted by the United States and other countries after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in late 1979. Like many of the best American athletes of 1980, he was denied the opportunity to participate on the largest stage for international sports. Beardsley set a world record of 1:58.21 in the 200- meter butterfly on July 30, 1980, one week after the Olympic Games—a time that was over a second faster than Soviet swimmer Sergey Fesenko‘s gold medal time in the 1980 Olympic finals.
Come and meet Beardsley in person and hear his incredible life story at the ISHOF Induction dinner on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Can’t attend the event? Please consider donating to ISHOF and support Craig and our other inspirational Honorees.
More About Craig Beardsley:
After the United States–led boycott of the Moscow Olympics, Beardsley continued to train and participate in competitive swimming. He held both the American and world records for the 200-meter butterfly from 1980 to 1983. Swimming World Magazine named Beardsley its American Male Swimmer of the Year in 1981. He was a two-time NCAA champion in the 200-meter butterfly and received eight All-American honors while swimming for the Florida Gators.
