Simone Fountain (nee Hankin) was a central figure in one of the most iconic moments in water polo history, leading Australia to gold in front of a home crowd at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney—the first Olympic tournament for women’s water polo.
As one of the world’s premier center forwards, she played a pivotal role throughout the competition, including delivering the decisive assist on the match-winning goal with 1.3 seconds remaining in the dramatic 4–3 victory over the United States. That moment remains one of the most celebrated in Australian Olympic history.
Her international career spanned 12 years, beginning with her debut at just 15 years old at the 1989 World Cup and continuing through 2000. Overall, Fountain competed in 193 matches for Australia, establishing herself as a dominant presence, winning multiple medals at World Cups and World Championships and consistently ranking among the world’s best. She was named to the Top 7 World Team six times between 1990 and 2000, reflecting her sustained excellence.
At the domestic level, Fountain starred with the Cronulla club, helping drive New South Wales’ dominance during the 1990s. She also competed professionally in Greece, further demonstrating her global impact on the sport.
Following her playing career, Fountain continued to contribute as a coach, mentor, and sports leader, supporting athlete development and promoting water polo in rural, remote and Aboriginal communities across Australia.
In recognition of her efforts, Fountain’s list of achievements includes receiving a revered Order of Australia Medal for services to water polo; being named finalist for the 1998 Australian Sports Star of the Year; and being made a Life Member of Cronulla Water Polo Club. She has also been a member of the Australian Olympic Committee’s Drug Free Sport Programme and the Olympic Education Ambassador Programme.
