A native of New Zealand, Kirsten Cameron’s journey in swimming is anything but traditional. She did not begin competitive swimming until the age of 30, when she joined a Masters club in Wellington. What started as a new challenge quickly evolved into one of the most impressive careers in modern Masters swimming. In just over a decade, Cameron established herself as a dominant force in freestyle events on the international stage.

Competing across four age groups—from 30-34 through 45-49—Cameron has amassed an extraordinary record of achievement on the world stage. She has set 23 FINA Masters World Records and accumulated an impressive 997 World Points. Her dominance in freestyle is further reflected in her world rankings: a staggering 70 No. 1 finishes, along with 11 No. 2 and 9 No. 3 rankings in long and short course events.

Cameron has appeared in the Masters Top 10 rankings 17 times, showcasing both her consistency and elite performance over the years. Her success extends to three FINA World Championships—in Stanford (2006), Perth (2008), and Gothenburg (2010). She won an incredible 10 gold medals in these competitions, setting world records in the process and solidifying her reputation in the freestyle events.

Now based in Leeds, Great Britain, Cameron has also embraced the challenges of open water swimming, competing in the World Cup circuit and completing a swim across the English Channel with a group of fellow swimmers.

Kirsten Cameron’s story serves as proof that greatness in sport can begin at any stage of life.
