American Heather Simmons-Carrasco was a vital member of the historic U.S. squad that won the first Olympic gold medal awarded in the team event for artistic swimming at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

That victory capped an extraordinary era of dominance, as the U.S. team remained undefeated in major international competition for seven consecutive years. From 1989 through 1996, Simmons-Carrasco contributed to eight team gold medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships and FINA World Cups, establishing one of the most successful teams in the sport’s history.

Training with the Santa Clara Aquamaids under renowned coach Chris Carver — and later as a longtime member of the U.S. National Team — Simmons-Carrasco built an 18-year career marked by consistency and innovation. While she’s best known for her team success, she also excelled individually, earning international medals in solo and duet events alongside partner Patti Lynn.

Following her competitive career, Simmons-Carrasco remained deeply committed to the sport. She transitioned into coaching, contributing to the development of future generations at both the club and national levels, including roles with the U.S. National Team and leading age-group programs. In 10 years as the lead coach of the Aquamaids, her 13-15 teams won countless medals. She is currently a coach at the Walnut Creek Aquanuts.
