European Masters Championships: 5 Gold
Over a career that has spanned decades, Georgy “Misha” Mshvenieradze has established himself as one of the most dominant center forwards in water polo.
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Mshvenieradze—known internationally as “Misha”—emerged from a distinguished water polo family. His father, Petr Mshvenieradze, captained the Soviet national team, and Georgy followed in his footsteps, becoming a cornerstone of the USSR squad from 1979 to 1989.
In that time, he achieved the sport’s highest honors, including an Olympic gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Games and a bronze at the 1988 Games in Seoul. He also captured a world championship title in 1982 and multiple European championships, becoming one of the defining players of his era.
Renowned for his power and intelligence at the two-meter position, Mshvenieradze revolutionized the center forward role. His ability to score under intense defensive pressure, combined with exceptional tactical awareness and leadership, made him a model for generations of players and coaches.
Following his elite international career, Mshvenieradze continued his dominance in Masters water polo. Since 2000, he has competed at the highest Masters level, earning seven gold medals and one silver at tthe Masters World Championships. His victories span multiple age groups, from 45+ to 60+, including a recent gold medal performance in Doha in 2024.
In addition to his success at World Championships, Mshvenieradze has secured five European Masters titles and won gold at other majoer international events such as the Copa de España Masters. Mshvenieradze has consistently elevated the play of every club he has played for, including WP Moscu04, Dynamo Masters, and Europa Sporting Roma.
