His achievements are made even more impressive by their longevity, with several of his records standing for well over a decade.

In global rankings, Tajima earned a combined total of 45 No. 1 rankings, 22 No. 2 rankings and 11 No. 3 rankings in breaststroke and butterfly events. His status as a world-ranked swimmer spans nearly four decades, marking him as one of the most consistent performers in Masters swimming.
On the world championship stage, Tajima competed in six Masters World Championships, earning a total of seven medals: two gold, two silver, and three bronze. From Tokyo in 1986 to Christchurch in 2002, he consistently represented Japan with distinction against the top Masters swimmers in the world. Tajima has not swum since 2021, in the 90-94 age group.
