Ellen Reynolds’ journey in swimming began early in California, where she first entered the water at the age of 3. Initially reluctant, her competitive spirit quickly emerged, and by age four she had already earned her first ribbon. She continued through age-group swimming and high school competition, eventually swimming at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.
Despite her early promise, Reynolds stepped away from competitive swimming to pursue an ambitious academic and professional path. Over the next 13 years, she completed medical school, general surgery residency, and a pediatric surgery fellowship, while also marrying and raising two children. She later became the first board-certified pediatric surgeon in Idaho after settling in Boise.
At age 40, Reynolds returned to the pool, reigniting her passion for the sport. Coached by her mother, Mary Ann Reynolds, she trained with remarkable discipline, balancing the demands of a medical career and family life.
Her success in Masters swimming came quickly. Reynolds set her first Masters world record at 47 in the 50m backstroke, followed by another the next year. As she moved into the 50-54 age group, she expanded her dominance across multiple events, setting records in the 100 and 200 backstroke, and in the 200 and 400 individual medley. She also became the first woman over 50 to swim the 100-yard backstroke in under one minute.
In the years that followed, Reynolds continued to break barriers, setting 10 additional world records in the 55-59 age group despite limited competition opportunities. Her achievements reached new heights in 2024 at the World Aquatics Masters World Championships in Doha, where she won and set world records in all five of her events. That year, she established 26 world records and contributed to five record-setting relays.
