A four-time Olympian, American Ryan Lochte emerged as one of the most accomplished swimmers in history, capturing 12 Olympic medals, including six gold.
From his debut at the 2004 Athens Games—where he earned silver in the 200m individual medley and gold as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay—Lochte played a key role in American swimming success over the course of his career.
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he won gold in the 200m backstroke and 4x200m free relay and bronze in the 200m and 400m IM. He reached new heights at the 2012 London Games, winning gold in the 400m individual medley and 4x200m free relay, silver in the 200m IM and 4x100m free relay and bronze in the 200m backstroke.
At the 2016 Games in Rio, he took one last Olympic gold in the 4x200m free relay.
Lochte’s dominance extended beyond the Olympic stage. Across World Championships competition, he amassed an astonishing 65 medals between long course and short course events, excelling in freestyle, backstroke and individual medley disciplines. His performance at the 2011 World Championships, where he won four individual gold medals and set a world record in the 200m individual medley, stands among the greatest single-meet achievements in the sport’s history, as that world record was the first in the post-supersuit era.
Known for his rivalry with Michael Phelps, Lochte carved his own path through relentless determination and confidence. His ability to challenge the very best—and often defeat them—defined an era of elite swimming.
