A three-time Olympic champion, Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo became one of the most dominant sprint freestylers of her generation and remained a fixture at the highest levels of the sport for more than a decade.
Kromowidjojo rose to international prominence in 2006 as a teenager at the European Long Course Championships in Budapest. There, she won her first international senior medal as a member of the Dutch 4x100m freestyle relay. Two years later, she captured her first Olympic gold in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Games.
At the 2012 London Olympics, she swept gold in both the 50m and 100m freestyles, setting Olympic records in each event. She also added a silver medal in the 4x100m free relay. Her efforts in London earned her the European Swimming Federation’s female European Swimmer of the Year award for 2012.
Over the course of her remarkable career, Kromowidjojo won 45 medals at the Short and Long Course World Championships, including her first individual long course title in the 50m freestyle at the 2013 World Championships. In short course competition, she was especially dominant, winning 14 world titles and contributing to multiple world-record-setting relay teams.
Known for her explosive speed, Kromowidjojo held world records in the 50-meter freestyle and several relay events, redefining sprint freestyle excellence.
Following her retirement in 2022, Kromowidjojo married fellow 2026 ISHOF inductee Ferry Weertman. The couple had a baby girl, Livia, in February of this year. She also gives back to aquatic sports in many ways and is an athlete ambassador for World Aquatics.
