Hall of Fame About Us

ISHOF’s Henning Library continues to help Authors tell the History of Aquatics

Authors Lisa Bier and Kelvin Juba have written to ISHOF thanking us for help in researching their latest books. Bier’s book, Fighting the Current: The Rise of American Women’s Swimming, 1870 – 1926, tells the story of American women emerging from the Victorian era and their fight to gain the right to swim and participate in athletic activities. Juba’s book, Five Rings of Water, which is scheduled for publication by British Swimming early next year, provides an entertaining look about the aquatic sports and the great athletes who participated in the Olympic Games from 1896 through the Beijing Olympic Games.

“I especially want to thank the staff of the wonderful International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale for allowing me to use their archive and library, where I was able to see the personal scrapbooks that had been proudly assembled by these young athletes. That, more than anything, gave me a sense of the lives of these women, and how swimming had opened up the world to them.”

“The Hall was invaluable in my research…. I am indebted to the Hall of Fame because without much of the material you made available, the book would have been considerably diminished. In addition, we shouldn’t forget our old family ties with the Hall go back a long way. As a young boy, I attended the very first induction ceremony and still have some of my childhood photos of the event here at home. It was indeed a memorable experience. It was therefore, a particular pleasure to renew my acquaintance with Fort Lauderdale during my research.”
