ISHOF Acquires Memorabilia of the Late Alexy Barkalov for Archive and Display
On Friday, August 19, 2006, Dr. Lydmila Barkolov, the widow of water polo great Alexy Barkalov, visited the Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale to deliver to ISHOF President Bruce Wigo a treasure trove of her late husband’s memorabilia. Barkalov, twice Olympic water polo champion and a citizen of the Ukraine, was inducted into ISHOF in 1993 and passed away in 2002. Among the items donated to the ISHOF museum were Alexy’s #7 Soviet water polo caps, swim and sweatsuits, photos, flags, patches, medallions and posters. The items will make an interesting addition to ISHOF’s water polo exhibit.
Dr. Barkolov, a former member of the women’s national team of the Soviet Union, was in the United States attending the FINA World Masters Championships in Palo Alto California and made a special trip to Fort Lauderdale to deliver her late husbands articles.
“This museum exceeds all of my expectations,” said Dr. Barkalov. “It was wonderful to see my husband among all of the great Olympic champions of history. He would be very pleased to see his memorabilia included in this magnificent collection. I am so impressed that I am planning to come back for to the honoree ceremony in May of 2007.”
Dr. Barkalov was escorted to the museum by Mikhail Goldenberg, a former Soviet water polo player who is now a resident of Coral Springs, FL and FINA referee.
